Why ESG data is more than a numbers game

In the race toward net zero, organisations are increasingly expected to quantify their environmental impact with precision. But when it comes to sustainability—especially the effects on ecosystems and communities—the challenge isn’t just about collecting data. It’s about capturing nuance.

Unlike financial metrics, the impact of a company’s operations on biodiversity, water quality, or community wellbeing is often qualitative, localised, and deeply contextual. These are not easily reduced to spreadsheets or dashboards. Yet, without data, there’s no accountability. This paradox sits at the heart of the sustainability data challenge.

From excel to ESG intelligence

At Logicalis we faced this exact dilemma. With ambitious goals to be carbon neutral on Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025 and net zero by 2050, we had the vision and leadership alignment. What we lacked was a robust, scalable way to manage the data behind those goals.

Initially, we relied on manual Excel-based systems stored in SharePoint. This approach quickly became a bottleneck. Regional ESG advocates across 30 territories struggled with version control, inconsistent updates, and limited visibility. The result? Frustration, inefficiency, and a risk of falling short on reporting standards.

So we found and adopted a suite that would transform sustainability data management – IBM Envizi. Offering more than just automation, the platform provides a unified, intuitive interface for tracking emissions, setting targets, and aligning with global reporting frameworks like GRI and TCFD. Crucially, allowing us to import historical data, enabling a baseline for progress.

Beyond compliance: building trust through ESG transparency

But the real value of Envizi wasn’t just in the numbers. It was in how it empowered people. By streamlining data collection and reporting, the platform freed up ESG teams to focus on strategy and storytelling—on understanding the “why” behind the data, not just the “what.”

This shift is critical. Measuring the impact of sustainability initiatives on ecosystems and communities requires more than carbon accounting. It demands a blend of quantitative rigour and qualitative insight. Platforms like Envizi can’t replace local knowledge or lived experience, but they can create the space for those voices to be heard.

Sustainability is a story – so measure what matters

As our experience shows, the path to sustainability isn’t just about technology—it’s about trust. Trust in the data, trust in the process, and trust in the people driving change. By investing in tools that support both precision and perspective, organisations can move beyond compliance and toward meaningful impact.

In the end, sustainability isn’t a spreadsheet. It’s a story. And the better we get at measuring what matters—however nuanced—the better we’ll be at writing the next chapter.
