From carbon neutral to net-zero: Why milestones matter on the road to sustainability

At Logicalis sustainability isn’t a secondary activity. It’s embedded in our DNA. As we mark our achievement of carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, it’s a moment to reflect on not only how far we’ve come, but also on the road ahead.

Why carbon neutrality is just the beginning

Reaching carbon neutrality is a significant milestone. It signals that we’ve taken concrete steps to measure and reduce our direct emissions and offset what remains. By FY25, we had reduced our absolute Scope 1 emissions by 23% and total Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 10% compared to our FY22 baseline. These reductions were achieved through a combination of country-specific carbon and energy reduction plans and increased use of renewable energy (now at 22% globally). The purchase of verified carbon credits from impactful projects around the world to offset our remaining emissions resulted in us achieving carbon neutrality.

But carbon neutrality is nowhere near the finish line. It’s a checkpoint. Our ultimate goal is net zero by 2050, and in addition to accelerating our progress on Scope 1 and 2 reductions, that means tackling the much larger and more complex challenge of Scope 3 emissions, which accounted for over 140,000 tonnes of CO2e in FY25.

The business case for sustainability

Sustainability is no longer a compliance exercise – it’s a competitive advantage. Customers, investors, and employees are all demanding more from the companies they engage with. Our recent byline in Business Reporter, “The Hidden Drivers of Sustainability,” explored how integrating ESG into core business strategy not only mitigates risk but also drives innovation and talent attraction.

We’ve seen this firsthand. Our recognition as Cisco’s Sustainability Partner of the Year for the second year running is a testament to how our environmental leadership is resonating in the market.

Why milestones matter

Milestones like carbon neutrality are critical for three reasons:

  1. They build momentum – Achieving a goal energises teams and validates the effort invested.
  2. They create accountability – Publicly committing to targets and reporting progress keeps us honest and focused.
  3. They enable learning – Each milestone teaches us what works – and what doesn’t – so we can refine our approach.

For example, our shift from blanket 5% reduction targets to tailored country-level plans is already yielding better results. And by investing in renewable energy and verified offsets (which we will continue to do to maintain our carbon neutral status), we’re not just reducing emissions – we’re supporting global development.

Looking ahead

Our next checkpoint is a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, a goal that is validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). To get there, we’ll need to accelerate our efforts, deepen our data capabilities, and continue embedding sustainability into every decision we make.

Because in the end, sustainability isn’t just about the planet. It’s about people, performance and purpose, and at Logicalis we’re committed to leading the way.
