Logicalis helps Garmin find IT

Garmin Australasia grew beyond all expectations in the recent five years with rapid growth in the fitness, marine and outdoor markets. Headcount more than tripled and the company started experiencing serious growing pains, with limitations in desk and warehouse space, thus inhibiting sales and revenue opportunity.

Challenge
Growing at a rate of 20 per cent each year, Garmin’s rapid expansion left the company unprepared for the level of infrastructure it required. The company decided to invest in a purpose-built Australasia HQ with enough office and warehouse space to provide a home for Garmin’s business in the foreseeable future.

“Looking ahead we said we need to have a place that not only fit where we are today and where we know we are going but also the technologies and businesses that we may not know about today but we will be involved in tomorrow,” said Matt DeMoss, General Manager of Garmin Australasia.

Solution
At this stage, Garmin had already been working with Logicalis for some time to help improve its network infrastructure. With limited internal IT resources, Bruno Daniele, IT Manager at Garmin Australasia tasked Logicalis with realising his vision of a corporate network infrastructure that would satisfy Garmin’s needs for the next decade.

Logicalis facilitated the undertaking in designing the architecture for all the switching and networking as well as getting all their different links in from remote sites in Manila and its head office in Kansas.Logicalis did the tactical work and provided the strategic knowledge.

Benefits
Through a series of workshops and wireless assessments, Logicalis ensured Garmin’s business requirements could be translated into a technical blueprint for their future. Working with strategic vendors like Cisco, Logicalis implemented the wireless infrastructure, the network and Cisco Identity Services Engine (Cisco ISE) to provide a secure foundation for their new office and warehouse facility.

Garmin’s new purpose-built facilities now serve as the distribution hub for all of Australia and New Zealand. Aviation equipment for the APAC region is also served from the facility, so some products are shipped to India, Singapore and Malaysia.
