Burton Snowboards Carves Better Performance through Server Consolidation
The Client
Founded in 1977 by Jake Burton, Vermont-based Burton Snowboard Company is now a dominant force in the snowboard industry.
The Challenge
Burton's existing infrastructure could not keep pace with the growth of its business. The volume of transactions was challenging its servers on a consistent basis and Burton was replacing its SAP/Informix database server every year. This led to a decrease in productivity and profitability.
The Solution
After analyzing Burton's needs, Logicalis recommended a highly available, scalable solution to meet Burton's growing needs. The solution involved implementing a Superdome; HP's high-end UNIX server engineered for large-scale applications and databases.
Through the use of Superdome's partitioning, Burton has the ability to shift processing power during particularly busy seasons. In addition, as part of the high availability strategy, Logicalis implemented HP's MC/ServiceGuard failover software. This monitors the health of their Superdome and quickly responds to failures in a way that eliminates or minimizes application downtime.
The Bottom Line
After Superdome was implemented, Burton experienced an immediate 30-40% increase in performance and a 40% increase in response time.
With Superdome in place, Burton has the ability to use up to 64 CPU's on the same server. When extra CPU's need to be added, it will take much less time.
